for some reason i’m addicted to ics – international channel shanghai. as one of the two english language channels i get on my television, and the one without a large supply of horrible news programs, it gets a lot of my television time. from my friend brian yang’s learning chinese and shanghai rush locally produced shows, to international shows like top gear and kitchen nightmares, the probability that ics shanghai has something on i want to watch is, well at least its higher than cctv-9 – the other chinese english channel.
but lately i have a new reason to watch. part-time host of expo connection, as well as co-host of shanghai a to z, ms. li sizhe (???). please ics shanghai, more programs with her as the host! and some bio information on your website!
thanks!

The co-host of Shanghai A to Z is Sunny Pan.
(Pan Chen in chinese.) From time to time they have a substitute: Li-Tong Hsu
I like both of them, but favor Sunny. Her english is by far the best on ICS. And she is really energetic.
I think Brian was amazing on the InChinese and its a shame he no longer does it. The new version is not as good with this new woman from Cool Edition.
ICS needs work on the news department and on its repeptive commercials for Reel Talk (james bond would never use a pearl handled revolver … and did you notice its LiTong Hsu’s legs he is sliding dow?), Movie Talk (we talk you wish we didnt), Getaway (Mxsterbate to get away), and My Dream (where I use the plight of children to boost my ratings)…. They repeat these commercials over and over and over again … probably because the shows are NOT THAT GOOD and need viewers. I like you are the Chef but the background music is invariably ANNOYING.
He Jian (Jason) is better on ICS News and Spotlight than the main hosts and he needs more airtime. Gosh his diction and pronounciation is wunderbar compared to Wang Dong… How did Mr. Dong get to be so senior at ICS???
Brians’ In Chinese needs to be brought back!!! And more Shanghai A to Z!!!!
Yeah, I know it’s Sunny Pan, but Li Sizhe was hosting during that particular time of sitting on the couch. Brian is currently in New York – so is probably unavailable to do anymore “In Chinese” (He told me he’d be back in the Spring) – I actually like Viviana Sun – who currently hosts in Chinese. I agree with your assessment of much ICS (and am amazed that anyone else watches as much bad TV as I do) – I’d rather they just ran a lot of Top Gear. But at least it’s better than CCTV9.
Ok, i never saw Top Gear before I got to China… but frankly, it is the BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!! I think we have similar tastes in TV and in food…. As for Vivian Sun, nothing against her, i just though Brian did a better job… it was somehow easier to learn chinese when he taught it… i think it has to do with style… Brian’s mode was one of instruction through practical examples. Viviana is more adacemic in style like when I took Chinese in college… it’s fine, but Brian rocks!
I just wish there was a way to fix ICS and get paid to do it.
Until then I better find a real job…
Yeah, but Brian is mortally embarassed by “In Chinese” and hopes they never show him in association with that show again, so it has that going against it.
Are there really people who learn Chinese through that show? Seriously? The show is too fast for those who have little knowledge of Chinese but too simple for those who knows some Chinese in terms of vocabulary. Most of the ICS shows are very poorly made and the majority of the viewers are local Chinese. I doubt there are many english speaking people that watch the channel at all. But Li SiZhe is indeed one of the better hosts on that channel.
I’m not sure if anyone learns Chinese on that show. My Chinese level is better than the show is teaching to, but I just normally turn on ICS in the morning for some noise in my apartment. I will say that with Viviana as the teacher, it’s running quite a bit better than it was with Brian as the host (as Brian himself would tell you). I do think that it’s possible to learn English expressions in reverse by watching “In Chinese”
Lots of English speakers watched Shanghai Rush – and I would think the other re-runs of English shows like Top Gear, Hell’s Kitchen, etc. would draw some viewers. The weekly winners on “You Are the Chef” do tend to be local Chinese though.
she is currently hosting that expo show now

Thanks – I saw that. In fact, I saw her broadcasting live when I was at the Expo last week.
what you mean by saw her broadcasting live? you mean you met her in the expo park?! is she good looking?
I didn’t really meet her. I saw her – inside the SMG rotating broadcast station. I didn’t get a really good look, but I’m sure she’s very attractive in person.
Sunny pan is hotter. I have seen her in person. WOW! a Goddess. and her english is amazing!
Sorry to say that Li Sizhe did used to be alright (cute) until she became host of the terrible ”indepedant inspector”. As a host she doesn’t have that zeal to pull off the kind of controversy (??) they are looking to create. And as for pulling in restarants on the first show to act as a police woman for having a toilet outside or other ridiculous things. Give me a break. I’m very, VERY VERY disappointed in ICS and Lisizhe for steering this show in this way. I’m sure if you went to the best restarant or hotel in Shanghai it would be worse. You can make things controversial but not for having a toliet outside the rrestarant. It made me think that it was like a university assignment show. It lacked real substance. Sorry Li sizhe – you lost my vote, your show is really shit.
While I am having a whinge about ICS – lets just say that Sammy Yang is a finger pointing idiot. Have you watched him on Sunday night. The poise, the questions…. that finger waving around….YUK. He is not cool, not as smart as he thinks he is and definitely has an ego the size of China. Maybe he is good at management as his bio suggests and should stick to that not as a host. Think he is just trying to moonlight to get some cheap money type girlfriend. Try harder Sammy, much MUCH harder.
further to last post ‘restaurant’ is misspelt.
Where has Sunny Pan gone? Those dolts at ICS better get their hottest and most talented host back on soon or they will lose me forever…
SUNNY …. PAN CHEN … SUNNY … PAN CHEN
