the most wonderful time of the year

i actually don’t believe that (for me, it’s spring, when basketball playoffs for both the ncaa and nba are in full swing, baseball starts and the sun comes back), but that’s how the song goes.

anyways, there are several reasons why i do enjoy the fall, aside from escaping the sweatbox that has defined summer ever since i left california in 1996 (a horrible decision in retrospect, as i continue to rack up years in hot-n-humid climates like guangzhou, hong kong, houston and shanghai).

first, starbucks holiday drinks. yes, its not coffee. yes, it’s $5 for a cup full of sugar. i don’t care what you think, i just know i enjoy my toffee nut latte. and even in religion-less and non-christmas celebrating china, the local starbucks still cranks out the toffee nut lattes.

mine didn’t look half as nice (no whipped cream), but it still was awfully tasty.

toffee nut latte

i only wish starbucks china would start in with the gingerbread lattes. now we’re talking.

but that’s only one-quarter as exciting as the emminent arrival of the best holiday of the year: thanksgiving! a day to eat one’s weight in buttered foodstuffs. i see no way this could end poorly. this year (and its the third year we’ve done this) we have about 20 people going to my friend colin’s apartment. we’re getting out turkey and sides from boxing cat brewery (a change from bubba’s – since bubba never acknowleged my reservation email.)

here’s the beginning of our menu

1 Whole Butter Roasted Turkey ; Apple Cider Giblet Gravy
Jalepeno Cornbread Stuffing
Cranberry Relish Creamy Mashed Potatoes
Maple Spiced Roast Sweet Potatoes

we’ll probably end up with a lot more food – there’s already talk of pie and macaroni and cheese and more pie and some salads and pie and maybe banana bread. it’s going to be epic.

You know, my favourite drink from Starbucks is a Caramel Macchiatto (Grande), but then someone (that cow Angie from Texas) told me that “the more complicated the coffee the bigger the t**t”, I’d never heard such language from the lips of a woman (ladies are all airs and graces back in the UK you know), I was shocked.

Anyway, I still get Caramal Machiatto every time I go and to be honest, she’s right, I am a t**t.

Just don’t think of it as coffee, and you’re in much better shape. It’s a $5 sugar rush with caffeine.

terence, well a toffee nut latte is more complicated than a caramel macchiatto, so you’d better hope not!

Is it customary in American culture to fast in preparation for the “Thanks-giving Day” rituals?

Well you both wrote blog posts about the toffee nut latte just a few days apart. And you both have great blogs!

She wears glasses and is attractive, in a swedish chinese glasses wearing fashionista sort of way.

I wear contacts and am only attractive to those who have forgotten to wear their glasses.

@apgalbraith – One may fast, however, our friend Grace is planning to eat a lot this week in order that her stomach may expand and stretch to take up additional turkey over the 4 days from Thursday through Sunday.

Ah, the Kobayashi Maru approach. “Maru” in this case meaning “circle”, or the shape one tends to after days of gorging. Unlike the other Kobayashi Maru, you can’t lose.

@apgalbraith No need to apologize – references to Star Trek are most welcome. I finally watched the Star Trek reboot fight and The Amok Time Spock/Kirk knife fight back to back – and now I can hear the sampled music.

If I have time I’ll run home and grab my Macbook with Amok Time on it. Or we can stream it via youku at Thanksgiving. Although that may result in people trying to stab us with unweildy Vulcan knives.

ouch I didn’t like the Gingerbread latte at all but I’m happy that Starbucks brought the Toffee Nut latte along with them. Btw why didn’t you get such a cute Christmas cup?

@elisa – they weren’t going to give me one, unless i ordered one to stay at Starbucks. And I only went down for the coffee, then back up to the office.
