old hong kong

another chinese new year is approaching, and for the second year in a row, i’ll be heading to my favorite city in the world, hong kong.

now, granted, unless you have family in hong kong (or like me, am happy just to be there) chinese new year isn’t the greatest time to visit, as many restaurants and shops are closed for the holidays.

but this is just a long-winded segue-way into some photos. my parents recently sent me this slideshow of old hong kong photos – put together by some guy in london named ray tse. i think they’re pretty fantastic.

I’ll be there too with my mum. Can’t wait to head down to the Australian Diary Co for some eggs and maybe get my spring wardrobe.

Unfortunately, last year Australian Dairy Company was closed over Chinese New Year – so I’d expect the same this year. If I were dingle or Swiss James, I think I’d make some sort of joke about “surely you remember Queen’s Road Central in the 1950′s, har har, WoAi is old” but I’m not, so I won’t.

Sorry forgot to say, awesome photos. Hard to imagine what it was like back then. Queens Rd looks so narrow.

Oh that sounds about right. It’s not like they need the money. Luckily I am going late and not coming back to Shanghai till 9th day of the new year, so I am guessing they won’t be closed the whole time.

Dingle – So what was Stoke like in the 1940s?

    like clockwork . . .

Nice – although I do not envy you the fireworks headache you will have. Unfortunately, I’m coming back on the 5th day, so I won’t be able to hit ADC, I’m hoping Tong Po in the Java Road cooked food center will be open, or at least Jim Tsai Kee in Central for wonton noodles.

Dingle – it must have been difficult overseeing operations for the Far East India Trading Company for the Queen, without regular supplies of quinine and gin, no? What was it like serving in Ceylon?

I’ll catch you at CLK airport then. Back to HK from Singapore that day early morning, then 4 days of shopping and eating heaven.

It’s actually quite good at CLK.
