eating in singapore: chicken rice lah!
in my life i talk a lot about chicken rice. when i mentioned i was going to singapore, i told people “i’m going for chicken rice.” i enjoy the movie “the chicken rice war.” i once spent an entire day in singapore eating nothing but chicken rice – 6 different plates.
8 years ago when i visited singapore with my parents, my friend sandra took us to boon tong kee on balestier road and we ate chicken rice street side on the sidewalk . . . and it was good.
so when i came back to singapore, i put in a request to sandra . . . and we made our way to boon tong kee again, but things done changed.
that’s right! an indoor restaurant where the sidewalk stand used to be! i’m not sure it is an improvement – i did like eating on the side of the road, but it was more comfortable.

eating in singapore: sandra’s paella
it wasn’t all roti, chicken rice, satay, and singaporian food. on saturday night, my good friend sandra prepared paella (and i made an apple crumble) and we ate by the pool at her apartment complex.

eating in singapore: black pepper crab
everyone knows that when you want chili crab or pepper crab, the best place to come is singapore. and once you’re in singapore the best place to have crab is east coast park seafood centre.
my friend mylinh suggested that we go to long beach for black pepper crab – as last time we had gone to jumbo.

eating in singapore: laksa and carrot cake
sigh. day 2 and i’m still eating in shopping malls. but that’s really because i was shopping. i swear i’m heading to hawker centres today.
yesterday lunch, however, i was (again) on orchard and in the basement of ION Orchard, when i saw a laksa stand.
laksa is a singaporian/malaysian dish made of noodles in a coconut . . . well, its not really a soup. its much thicker and richer – its much more like a gravy. according to wikipedia, its from pernakian cuisine – meaning a mix of malay and chinese.
whatever its origins – its really quite good. and something we don’t get great examples of in shanghai, but here in singapore – even in a mall shopping food court – its quite fantastic.
here’s the laksa gravy

and as a bonus – here’s some singaporian carrot cake:

eating in singapore: thye hong
so why would i choose my first meal in singapore in the middle of a mall food court? well for one, i was still carrying my luggage with me – so i was hanging around orchard road shopping mall wisma atria when dinner time came.
so i made my first meal in singapore at thye hong hokkien mee famous for their fried prawn noodles.
even though thye hong is in the middle of a shopping mall food court, they got their start in a proper hawker centreand were very famous in their original location – which i’m too lazy to look up. their calling card was to fry the prawn noodles in prawn stock.
they’re really quite good. the noodles are tender, but with enough bite almost to be al dante – the mix of sambal paste with the seafood provides a nice spicy backdrop for the noodles.
i’ll be hitting the hawker centres over the weekend, but if you’re shopping on orchard, you could a lot worse than thay hong.

Northeastern Four Season Dumpling King
dumplings might be my favorite thing to eat in the world. or at least they’re among them, and one of my favorite spots in shanghai is northeastern four season dumpling king. because i was first introduced to them at the xuhui store of this chain, we often go there, but looking at dianping.com there’s a chain of them – and ones a lot closer to both work and home.
