On the phone with one of my best friends from college, Chris.
“So where do you want to go for dinner?”
“How about Zachery’s?”
“Ok, but can we go to the one in Oakland – the Solano location is always crazy”
“Sure,” I say, “but where is it?”
“College Avenue – you know, near the Safeway?”
“Oh yeah,” I reminisce, “I used to shop there at 3am. I once ran into Mike Dirnt there and a really weird hour.”
“Oh hey . ..did you know he owns a restaurant now?”
Which is how we ended up at Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe.
Located near Emeryville’s IKEA (very punk rock) and with menu items named after Clash and Sex Pistols album/song titles (Give ‘Em Enough Meatloaf, Combat Mac & Cheese, God Save the Chicken).
The food was all american comfort food – but with some interesting additions (buffalo tofu – instead of buffalo wings – the meatloaf was slightly fancy)
This was Chris’ small salad.
It was an odd crowd – very bay area. Full of young hipsters, middle aged punks and older . . . well, maybe reformed hippies. All cutting edge type people, all tattooed up, eating diner food.
Food was very very good, but it wasn’t great. Just comfortable, with a great soundtrack.
