If you were a big Nirvana or Sonic Youth fan in the early 90s, you knew that Kurt Cobain and Thurston Moore were fans of this, then obscure, Osaka based trio of Japanese women who put out Ramones-lite power pop punk songs, singing about things like banana chips and rockets and giant kitties.

In fact, Shonen Knife toured the states during the hey-day of Lollapalooza, in 1994 where I saw them play during the Smashing Pumpkins/Beastie Boys headlined tour at the Shoreline Amphitheatre – and then again 16 years later in Shanghai when they played at Zhijiang Dream Factory

The show was great – even if the members of the band have changed since I saw them – they still play lots of songs about delicious food. They still rock like the Ramones, if the Ramones were women from Osaka. And they are by far the most crowd friendly rock stars I’ve ever seen.

They even manned their own merchandise counter, selling t-shirts, stickers and CDs themselves (which they’d be happy to autograph for you – or even take a photo with you). The bassist (Ritsuko) was especially friendly and was interacting with the crowd all night.

Saturday night: boys climbing ropes, st. vincent @ YYT Shanghai

friday night reviewed here my thoughts: xiao yoi (lead singer of pinkberry) was ill, and the crowd was clearly there for sonnet so they had trouble getting the crowd into it. candy shop had to do this terrible promotion for jaeger which killed any momentum they had. sonnet had some great danceable franz ferdinand-esque tracks which i really dug . . . a lot of experimentation with loops and dubs and electronic sounds from a sampler, which i did not dig. boys climbing ropes continue to rock and continue put on a great show. i am a huge fan.

saturday night photographed here by jenn wong and here by me. boys climbing ropes continue to rock and continue to put on a great show. i am a huge fan. st. vincent was fantastic – lots of experimental insturmentalation sounds combined with a beautiful voice.
