new comic book movie just came out in the us. i’m quite excited to see it here – but with all the pirate dvd stores quiet, the chances of this showing up anytime soon are slim.

dadgummit! blowout!
for me, watching the 1983 movie “a christmas story” is almost as much as a tradition as christmas itself.
with that in mind, we had everyone get together to watch the movie and to have meatloaf, mashed potatoes, broccoli florets with cheese sauce and cream of mushroom soup (prepared by colin). it was the first time i’ve made meatloaf – but it turned out quite well, except for it falling apart, so it became meat-pile, instead of meatloaf.

three beats on a snare drum . . . then into a funky bass beat.
that’s how the beginning of michael jackson’s “wanna be startin’ something” begins – if you know the song, then you’ll instantly recognize those three drum beats.
appropriately enough, wanna be startin’ something is the first song in the new movie “this is it” which features footage from the practices that were going to lead up to michael jackson’s last concert series to be held at london’s o2 arena, well right now.

yes, i know i’m late on this, as its been open in the US since may 29 . . .and out on pirated dvd for at least 3 weeks.
yes it borrows heavily from studio ghibli.
its probably less appropriate for kids than most pixas movies, with a grump grumpy man, two deaths and a miscarriage.
but, man is it the best movie of the year.
sad, funny, heartfelt, and really a much deeper message than most message movies nowadays have.
pixar’s up was well worth the 80rmb i spent at the xintiandi cinemas (for 3d), and being completely honest, i will probably go see it again in the theaters.
